September 19 Cape Town to Kamieskroon

Nancy’s Tea Room, Clanwilliam

We left Cape Town in the morning and drove north. We stopped at Clanwilliam, where we had lunch—rooibos tea and scones at a tea house. The town was in a citrus-growing area, and since it was spring, we could smell orange blossoms all around.

Desert flowers

North of Clanwilliam we entered the southern reaches of the Namib Desert, where we would be spending the next week or so. There were some displays of spring flowers, mostly purple as in this picture, but also a few including red, yellow, and white flowers.

Our first campsite

Our first campsite was close to a town called Kamieskroon, in a rocky desert landscape. Here we learned how to put up the tents (large and robust canvas tents which we could stand up inside) and all the other details of day-to-day life in the truck.
