Iceland 2009

We hadn’t planned to go to Iceland. But one day out of the blue there came an e-mail from our Scottish friend Christine, who we had met on the hiking trip through Lesotho in 2006. She had gone on a bus tour around Iceland for a week (there’s a funny story behind that but you aren’t going to read it on this blog) and just loved it. So, she said, did we want to meet up in Iceland for a holiday?

It didn’t take much research for us to agree. We decided on late June — there would be maximum hours of daylight per day and it would be late enough in spring so that snow shouldn’t be a problem. In our usual ambitious way we planned a trip to visit all parts of Iceland. We would spend a couple of days in Reykjavík, then go up to the West Fjords for a few days, then over to Mývatn (for the birds) and the north of Iceland for a couple of days. Then we would follow the Ring Road clockwise, passing through the east and south of Iceland, ending up at Skaftafell for a bit of hiking in the national park. And finally we would take a bus tour to Landmannalaugur in the highlands to do a little hut-to-hut hiking on the Laugavegurinn trail. All crammed into an action-packed two and a half weeks.

Iceland is well supplied with youth hostels, so we stayed in those whenever they were available. As for driving, there was a lot of that. Neil and Rosemary shared the driving duties. We North Americans were used to driving for hours on end through unpopulated areas, but the others found that a bit wearisome at times. However there were only a couple of really long days and everybody had a great time.
