Castle Drogo

We visited Castle Drogo on our first full day in Devon. Unlike the other castles we had seen, it was a 20th century castle built by a supermarket entrepreneur.

Teign valley

From Castle Drogo we went for a short walk down into the valley of the Teign River. The weather was mixed, but we were in the pub having a cream tea while the worst rain shower passed by.

We walked from Castle Drogo down the hill through the forest to the river, then along the river and back up to the castle.

And of course we had to go for a hike on Dartmoor. It was blustery with showers, but it’s Dartmoor, what can you expect?

Dartmoor ponies

We did see some small herds of Dartmoor ponies, including a couple of colts that were galloping about.

There was the remnants of an old hill fort on Dartmoor too, named Grimspound.

We had dinner in Torquay after our Dartmoor hike. Although it is the English Riviera, there was nobody on the beach and hardly anybody in the streets.
